Damage analysis for detection, root cause analysis and prevention
Damage investigations in surface technology are essential for the optimisation of coating processes and materials. In our laboratory, we determine the causes of damage or defects on surfaces. We use modern optical instruments to identify anomalies. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we analyse the microstructure and carry out chemical analyses to determine the composition and stability of the coatings. These techniques enable us to carry out detailed damage analyses that not only provide information about the causes of damage, but also help to prevent future problems.
Our services
Layer analyses
We have a variety of different measuring devices for measuring the coating thickness: several X-ray devices, various measuring devices for magnetic inductive measurement and eddy current measuring devices, as well as light microscopic or electron microscopic measuring methods - including EDX. Hardness measurements (small load hardness testing and nanoindenters), calotte grinding, scratch tests, adhesion tests and determination of hardness profiles are also possible.
Tribological system analysis
The following analyses for determining friction and wear are possible:
- Ball-on-disc
- STM G99, rotating or oscillating
- Cylinder-cylinder
- Dry/lubricated
- Manual abrasion
Damage analyses
Damage analysis of damaged surfaces can reveal whether damage occurred during production or whether it is due to application or assembly errors. Sometimes material fatigue is also the cause.
Defining the cause of damage is often the basis for optimising a coating system or improving an entire assembly.
Metallography
In addition to the chemical composition, various metallurgical properties such as density, hardness and grain size determine the quality of a material. We can carry out professional metallographic analyses in our own laboratory and thus provide our customers with important findings and information in a timely manner.
