Wear and impact resistance for bicycle components

The drivetrain components of bicycles are subject to heavy loads. Not only do they have to efficiently transfer the energy generated by the rider to the rear wheel, they also have to withstand shocks, impacts and abrasive particles.

One challenge is to find materials with high wear and impact resistance. Without protection, wear leads to reduced performance, more maintenance and expensive replacement parts.

Coating the parts with a ductile hard chrome layer offers an effective solution. Hard chrome is extremely hard and protects the surface from premature wear. The ductile variant also offers good impact resistance, which means it absorbs knocks and impacts without cracking or detaching from the base. This coating significantly improves the longevity and reliability of components in demanding conditions and is PFAS-free.

The advantages of ductile hard chrome plating

Technically speaking, the hard chrome coating improves the performance of the drivetrain by reducing friction between the moving parts and thus enabling more efficient operation. The increased hardness of the surface reduces wear, which extends the service life of the components and increases maintenance intervals. The improved impact resistance protects the parts from damage caused by external influences, which is particularly beneficial in harsh or off-road conditions.

In economic terms, the hard chrome coating offers many advantages. The extended service life of the components leads to a reduction in operating costs, as spare parts need to be procured and assembly work carried out less frequently. This also increases customer satisfaction through increased reliability and reduced downtime. In addition, the improved performance and durability of the components can serve as a sales argument and increase the competitiveness of bicycle brands on the market.
