Innovative coating techniques for military technology
The defence and armaments industry requires surface technology for the refinement of chassis components, shock absorbers, drive systems and other equipment. De Martin offers a wide range of processes, including chemical, galvanic, PVD/PACVD and hybrid processes, which enable customised solutions for specific applications. Here are some examples of our services: For chassis components and shock absorbers, we develop targeted chemical coatings that ensure increased durability and functionality. In defence technology, electroplating processes are used to coat components in order to achieve optimum hardness and corrosion resistance. Drive systems benefit from PVD/PACVD coatings that offer improved wear resistance and performance, especially in demanding environments. The internal coating of small calibres is achieved through our specialised processes, ensuring an optimal surface finish for precision and durability. Our expertise in surface treatment and coating helps to maximise the performance and reliability of defence technology and armaments to meet the demanding requirements of the field.

Wear protection for defence technology (from small calibre to gun barrels)
Tubes are exposed to extreme loads during use. The transition from the chamber to the calibre requires effective wear protection due to the erosive and impact loads In addition to the high pressures and temperatures that can locally reach the melting point of the steel, heat protection or efficient heat dissipation is required to maintain the required strength of the steel and prevent superficial embrittlement and material loss. Maintaining the geometry despite the erosive load is crucial for extending the service life of the pipes.
The decisive role of an optimised hard chrome process
For this application, an optimised hard chrome plating process is used in combination with upstream special pre-treatment processes. This hard chrome plating after customised pre-treatment offers the best adhesive strength compared to other coating processes and technologies. The pre-treatment also enables the internal geometry of the tube to be precisely adjusted. Hard chrome plating ensures thermal protection. Critical temperatures are avoided by designing the layer thickness accordingly - the chrome layer acts as a heat buffer. This layer also forms a barrier against hot gas corrosion and protects against hardening and heat cracks and also acts as effective erosion protection. These properties ensure that the geometry and dimensional tolerances are maintained. This leads to a longer service life. Compared to unchromed pipes, chrome-plated pipes perform better and resist damage such as cone expansion and material loss due to erosion and corrosion for longer. A damaged or imperfectly designed chrome layer will show similar behaviour to an uncoated pipe at the site of damage with a time delay. Chrome plating optimised for this application and professional design of the system are therefore crucial for a long service life of the pipes.
